Faces in the Day

Gray mid November Monday.  The Holidays and the end of the year arising fast. Wanting to sit in the slowness of the present moment.

The Cape

At the urging of his daughter, the middle aged man put on a cape and a crash helmet before going to work.  He vowed to keep it on all day.  He felt transformed and the world seemed to treat him differently.  No large heroic acts where performed, only small politenesses and smiles given and received.  These did seem to make a difference.  At the end of the day the man went home, took off the cape and helmet, sat down to face his mountain of bills to pay, the low balance alert from the bank, news about the war on terror, and all the small failures life brings. A sadness welled up inside.  He thought of the cape and decided to put it back on.

Facing October

Mid October and the devils, witches, and ghosts are hard at work performing their tricks, torments, and occasional treats.  All that orange combined with the hot weather of Santa Ana winds has made for much fire fighting. I would rather hide, but I know the best tactic is to stand still, face the fire and do what seems right. Then make corrections when it is not.  In between there have been glimpses of beauty: a mystical sunset seen while driving to Santa Barbara.  The sun looked like it was melting into the sea.  And last night the trees around my house where aglow in the orange light of evening. Tricks and treats abound.
